Karen Slaton Article on Target
As an educator, I
found the Article by Karen Slaton to be right on target. Most teachers
spend 60 to 70% of their day managing the classroom and it is often
difficult to complete one task during the school day, let alone many.
Two key issues would
eliminate much of the issues in classrooms today: uniforms and
discipline. By issuing a mandate to make students wear uniforms and
shoes (not sneakers), more household money would be available for
supplies that the school department cannot provide. By instituting same
day detention and very strict disciplinary measures, teachers could
again focus on teaching instead of managing.
It is true that the future depends on the children...the present belongs to those school departments that have little regard for making the tough decisions that are needed to bring education back to the future.
