War is About Freedom

To the Editor:

It is a beautiful day in New England and folks get up with the usual thoughts…we are at war and our environment is changing.  We listen to the news on the radio, television and watch war coverage on the Internet, wishing and praying for peace but being conservative in our thought process.  Freedom takes its toll in many ways.

A thorough review of the quest for freedom includes the education of those who are uneducated about the peace process.  Men and women volunteer to serve their country to keep peace, not to make war.  Those who choose to do so are well aware that this may cost them their life.

Colin Powell attended a conference in England when he was queried by the Archbishop of Canterbury.  The Archbishop asked Colin Powell if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire-building by President Bush.  Powell answered “Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders.  The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.”

It is not odd that during times of conflict folks turn to entertainment to avoid stress.  With this in mind, I was gifted with tickets to see last night’s Celtics game.  After entering the Fleet Center in Boston, the crowd gathered at the security entrance for admission.  Standing their chatting with folks, I observed every security guard called into the Fleet Center.  Previously, the police had gathered for a group meeting.  The security alert must have been serious since we were detained from entering for approximately ten minutes.

We must not become complacent.  If we believe that another incident such as the hit on 9-11 can never happen again, we are incorrect.  The terrorists have had ample time to move their people into the United States through Canada and to plan major events.  There are many reasons why we should prepare our home survival kits as Homeland Defense has advised.  It would behoove each American to take the time to visit the website and plan accordingly.
